Do Not Dig Here

Deep stores for spent nuclear fuel are built to stay shut for many thousands of years, and their builders have to warn readers who may share none of our words. So does the tub at the back of your fridge.

Do Not Dig HereA 10,000-year warning for the thing nobody should open

Name the tub, the drawer or the box. The page scans your own warning note for words a far-off reader will not have, and weathers it on a granite marker. Then carve a proper one: a top line anyone could get, a short warning, four plain facts, the full record and pictograms.

Try a sample:

1 What is sealed

2 Your own warning (optional)

Drop a .txt here too. Leave it empty and the carving starts from your facts.

    Pictograms

A playful model, not a prediction: a word fades when its meaning is likely gone (names and dates after 10 years, slang, shouting and in-jokes after 100) or when its groove is (long words by 1,000 years, small print first, the big top line never). Pictograms never fade.

      4 Carve it

One run carves the four layers for a reader with none of your context, picks 2 to 4 pictograms, lists every phrase in your draft that will not survive with a plain swap, adds a line for a five-year-old in the house today, and guesses how a far-future finder might misread the top line.

The verdict on your draft is a fixed rule, checked in order: fresh carving if there is no draft; recarve it if the draft never says what it is or where, or if 3 or more phrases will not survive; patch it for 1 or 2; will last for none.

      How the free side works

The drift scan is a set of plain rules in your browser: a capitalised word in mid-sentence reads as a name; any number, month, weekday or "next week" reads as a date; a short list of text-speak reads as slang; runs of capitals and doubled marks read as shouting; phrases such as "trust me" or "like last time" read as in-jokes. It misses names at the start of a sentence and every brand, which is why the carving adds its own. The pictograms are guessed from keywords in your facts until a carving picks its own.

A returned carving is checked against your form: the verdict against the rule, every phrase the page flagged listed in the drift, every drift phrase really in your draft, the word limits of each layer, the year you gave in the 'when' line and no date you never gave, 2 to 4 pictograms from the set, no name from your draft on the marker, no exclamation marks, no he or she, no "years ago", and no internal field names in the text.
